Semaglutide vs. Tirzepatide: What's the Difference?

Semaglutide and tirzepatide are the two medications behind most of today's medical weight loss success stories. Both are once-weekly injections, and both reduce appetite. They aren't identical, though.

How they work

Semaglutide (the active ingredient in Wegovy®) acts on one hormone receptor, GLP-1. Tirzepatide (the active ingredient in Zepbound®) acts on two: GLP-1 and GIP. That second pathway seems to strengthen the effect on appetite and blood sugar.

Results

In clinical trials, both medications produced meaningful weight loss. Tirzepatide averaged somewhat more. Individual results vary a lot, and some people respond better to one than the other.

Which is right for you?

The best choice depends on your health history, how you tolerate side effects and your budget. At Weight Wise, semaglutide programs start at $100/week and tirzepatide at $120/week. Your provider will help you weigh the options. Book a consult to talk it through.

What to Expect at Your First Weight Loss Visit

Walking into a weight loss clinic for the first time can feel intimidating. Here's exactly what happens at your first Weight Wise visit, whether it's in our office or by video.

1. Your health story

We'll ask about your weight history, past diets, medical conditions, medications and family history. There are no wrong answers and no judgment.

2. Measurements

We record your weight and blood pressure. For telehealth visits, we'll ask for recent numbers. Labs may be ordered if needed.

3. Your options, explained honestly

Your provider will explain which programs fit you, including the benefits, side effects and costs, and answer every question.

4. A clear plan

You'll leave knowing your next steps: your medication, how to take it, what to eat to feel your best, and when your next check-in is.

Protein, Hydration and GLP-1s: Eating Well on Medication

When a GLP-1 medication dials down your appetite, what you eat matters more than ever. These simple habits help you feel better and protect your muscle while the scale goes down.

Put protein first

Aim to start each meal with a protein source such as eggs, Greek yogurt, chicken, fish, tofu or beans. Protein helps preserve lean muscle and keeps you satisfied.

Drink more water than you think you need

Reduced appetite often means reduced thirst too. Dehydration can make nausea, fatigue and constipation worse. Keep a water bottle with you.

Eat smaller and slower

Your stomach empties more slowly on a GLP-1. Big or greasy meals are the most common trigger for nausea. Stop at the first sign of fullness.

Move your body

Even two short strength sessions a week help protect muscle and support your metabolism.

Phentermine: Who It's For and How It Works

Phentermine has been used for decades, and it's still one of the most affordable prescription tools for weight loss.

How it works

Phentermine acts on the brain's appetite centers to reduce hunger. It's taken once daily, usually in the morning.

Who it's for

Adults with a BMI of 30 or more, or 27 or more with a weight-related condition, who don't have heart disease, uncontrolled high blood pressure, glaucoma or an overactive thyroid.

What it costs at Weight Wise

Programs start at $90/month in Maryland and $120/month in Florida. That includes your monthly visit, a B12 shot and your prescription. Learn more about phentermine →
